Sisters of Gabriela, Awaken! (SiGAw)
Sisters of Gabriela, Awaken! (SiGAw) is an organization serving Filipinas in the Los Angeles community. We strive to build a strong Filipina women’s mass movement, recognizing that the problems of the Filipina diaspora are linked to the root problems of the Philippines. SiGAw addresses the rights and welfare of women through education, organizing, campaigns, and cultural work.
SiGAw is a member organization of GABRIELA-USA, an overseas chapter of GABRIELA (General Assembly Binding Women for Reforms, Integrity, Equality, Leadership, and Action). GABRIELA is the largest and most mlitant women’s alliance that is working for genuine democracy and freedom in the Philippines. SiGAw is also a member organization of BAYAN-USA.
The word SiGAw holds a deeper meaning beyond the acronym. In the Tagalog language, the word “sigaw” is a noun, meaing “shout”. This is emblematic of the work that SiGAw strives to accomplish in speaking out against injustice. We will not remain silent in the face of human rights violations and our efforts are to promote true liberty.
SiGAw’s membership is open to women of various ages of Philippine descent, including those who are migrants, immigrants and US-born. We recognize Filipinas of mixed heritage and adoptees. SiGAw is an LGBTIQ-(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer/Questioning) friendly organization that is inclusive of gender-non conforming people of Philippine descent.
SiGAw’s membership is committed to educating, organizing, and mobilizing the un-served and under-served populations, including working class women, im/migrant women, women with disabilities, mental health, and/or substance abuse issues.
